Consider the story of the widow in 2 Kings 4:1-7.
2Kings 4:1 The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, "Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the LORD. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves."
2Elisha replied to her, "How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?" "Your servant has nothing there at all," she said, "except a little oil."
3Elisha said, "Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don't ask for just a few. 4Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side."
5She left him and afterward shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. 6When all the jars were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another one." But he replied, "There is not a jar left." Then the oil stopped flowing.
7She went and told the man of God, and he said, "Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left."
Let's review the Biblical principles of Christian debt relief we can glean from the widow's situation. First of all, she started by seeking Godly counsel for a debt solution. She went to the man of God and asked for help regarding her husband's creditors.
I'm sure she must have been surprised by Elisha's instructions. Instead of giving her money, he actually gave her a business plan for starting a retail oil outlet. This demonstrates that oftentimes Christian debt relief may not necessarily come in the form you might expect. So don't limit God in how he can help you. God has many ways of providing for Christian debt relief.
She was given specific instructions to follow. She acted in faith by going forth and asking her neighbors for empty jars and filling them with the little oil she had.
After they were all filled, she went back for further instruction. She followed thru with the instructions she received. She did what she knew to do. She had a role to play. The money did not just drop from the sky. She and her family earned it in their new enterprise.
It's also important to note that at the point she started to pour the oil as instructed, the Power of God went to work in her situation and she kept pouring. She didn't stop until she had completed the assignment. Once there were no more jars, the oil stopped. In other words, when she did what she was instructed, regarding operating her new business God's way, she experienced extraordinary results.
It wasn't until she fully obeyed his first set of instructions, that Elisha then told her to sell the oil and pay her debts and that she and her sons could live on what was left. If she had not acted in faith on his initial instructions, I doubt she would have received the next steps.
So once you hear from God, your assignment is to fully obey. You may not get all of the instructions up front. You will have a role to play and your instructions will probably require you to act in faith.Further, note that she not only received debt relief, but she received more than enough. She received enough to pay her debts and enough for her family to live on what was left. I believe she actually sold the oil back to each of the neighbors from whom she borrowed empty jars. The neighbors obviously needed oil, since their jars were empty. So her obedience actually helped meet their needs as well. I believe they were blessed by blessing her. This was an awesome business plan!
I like the fact that she started with what she had. Elisha asked her "what do you have...?". She said "nothing, except a little oil". God used what she had to work with. You don't always need a lot to get started. Sometimes a little oil is all you need.
What do you have that God can use for your Christian debt relief? Is it a certain skill, a talent, ability or gifting? You may have the makings of a book inside of you that you can sell to help others. Maybe you have a God idea for an online business or a service that meets the needs of others.
In the story of the widow, I believe the oil is representative of the Holy Spirit. As Christians, we have the Holy Spirit living within us. We actually have a strategic advantage that the world doesn't have. We have access to the Wisdom of God to instruct us and assist us in every area of our lives, including our finances and Christian debt relief.
Sell the Oil
The widow was instructed "sell the oil and pay your debts...". In other words, she used her access to God's Wisdom and obtained instructions on how to use what she had to obtain her debt relief.
Let me say that again - She used her access to God's Wisdom and obtained instructions on how to use what she had to obtain her debt relief. You can too!
Proverbs 8:10 _Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, 11for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.
So seek Wisdom from God for instruction and knowledge to apply in your situation to receive Christian debt relief. The important Biblical principle here is instead of seeking money for your debt relief, seek Godly Wisdom. When you follow God's plan, His Power will be released in your situation and you will receive your debt relief.
