Christian finances...many Christians cringe the moment that they hear that phrase and understandably so. While most Christians do believe that it is God's Will that His people prosper and are not bogged down in so much debt that they cannot clearly see their way out, most still find themselves unable to get a handle on their finances or get ahead and out of debt.
Christian finances, most would ideally agree, should be used wisely to provide a living for the Christian and to promote the kingdom of God as the Christians give to charitable causes, the work of the ministry and back to God in the form of tithes and offering. Yet most Christian finances, like those who are not of the household of faith, are increasingly being used to pay on mounting debt and to debt collectors who call all hours of the day pursuing payment on debts.
So is there a real answer to obtain or maintain increased Christian finances? There is an answer and that answer is found in the Holy Bible. When studying the Bible, one may note that those men in the Bible who were wealthy were also men who were considered to be wise. First, look at Abraham. Abraham was a man of great wealth and substance. Abraham was also a man of great wisdom who believed God and had a real relationship with God.
Second, another wealthy individual was Job. Job had great wealth but he was also considered wise. He had relationship with God, and as you read the Bible, you may note that Job was also considered wise within his community and had counseled others who were in need of his counsel.
Lastly, look at Solomon. Solomon did not pray for riches even. Solomon prayed for wisdom and God was so pleased that He blessed Solomon with wealth as well.
As you study the Bible, you may see that increased Christian finances is obtainable but requires you to use wisdom in financial matters. You see, God does want to bless and prosper His people, however, that blessing may not come in the form of unexpected monies that will suddenly lead to wealth or someone handing you an unexpected check. God may bless you to have increased finances through your job, through your business or even a "God idea" that you can turn into something profitable.
The Bible, specifically the Book of Proverbs, has a great deal to say about wisdom and places great value on wisdom. For instance, Proverbs 4:7-8 reads:
"For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it."
Wisdom is to be valued in financial matters as well and can go hand in hand with increased finances because the person who uses wisdom in finances is least likely to make rash decisions, wasteful decisions or be indecisive when it comes to financial matters.
Most, if asked, would immediately agree that he or she could do more or get ahead more if only he or she had more income, yet, taking into account how important it is to use wisdom in financial matters, it appears that it would be more beneficial for Christians to pray for wisdom in handling their current finances rather than just praying for increased finances.
Praying for wisdom is even encouraged in God's Word and God promises to give wisdom when asked.
James 1:15 reads:
"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him."
Remember that God is not only concerned about our spiritual lives. God is concerned about every area of our lives. Christian finances can be increased and can become the blessing that God truly intended for you and others that are in need and you can move out of debt by asking God to give you increased wisdom in financial matters and by seeking His guidance in purchases, investment, employment and all other financial opportunities.
